27 Sep 2011 M.A.Numminen took part in the Gothenburg Book Fair 22.-25. of September. He presented his book Till Helsingfors (To Helsinki), which is the Swedish translation of the Finnish book Helsinkiin from 1999. It is a student novel which also includes a huge information package about the cultural revolution from the beginning of the early sixties. About this time has nobody written a whole book. About the latter part of the 60s, the political arts, have been published many books. Till Helsingfors describes the rise of electronic music, new cinema, the pop era of painting, experimental poetry etc. But, also "wine, women and song" are within the life of the student Juho Niitty. In Gothenburg the book excited interest among the Swedish journalists.
20 May 2011 M.A.Numminen was granted a doctoral degree honoris causa (political sciences) by Abo Akademi, the Finland-Swedish university. The ceremony took place in the Concert Hall of the City of Turku on May 20th 2011. Numminen was awarded partly for his contributions to bringing together art and science, partly for successfully promoting the relationships between Finland and Sweden. Mr. Numminen himself looks at he award as a recognition of the scientific cooperation between him and the Academy. Abo Akademi is the only university in Finland which since the beginning of the 21st century has invited M.A.Numminen to lecture and participate in seminars -- and perform as a singer at the occasion of international guests residing there. M.A.Numminen will use the title of "Dr. h.c." first of all in German speaking countries.
13 Apr 2011 A hectic Spring! Here three examples about successful concerts. M.A.Numminen visited on the 24th of March 2011 the Lulea Jazz Festival with the whole Neo-rustic Orchestra. This is exceptional. Normally the arrangers order only his duo. It was a question of the 10th festival of the organization Swedish Jazz Celebration. Mr. Numminen performed his program naturally in Swedish. It was a big success. On the following day the concert article in the local newspaper was headlined Mysteriet Numminen (Mystery called Numminen).
The next positive welcome was given in Neuruppin on the 2nd of April 2011. Neuruppin is a former garrison town about hundred kilometers from Berlin. M.A.Numminen sang naturally in German. The small town in the ex-GDR proved to be very cultural minded. The duo M.A.Numminen & Pedro Hietanen had to play several extra numbers.
Only some days after this, on the 6th of April 2011, the duo took part in the Sonic Protest Festival in Paris. Mr. Numminen's French is rusty which brings shame on him. So he performed his program in English and Finnish, even used an interpreter. But: the French audience was thrilled with this strange phenomenon. The ARTE TV France interviewed Numminen and filmed his concert.
Just two days later, on the 8th of April 2011, M.A.Numminen was the judge of the Comic Strips Finlandia Competition in Tampere, Finland. Numminen gave no first price at all, only two second prices. This aroused ashtonishment. But Numminen could not find the absolute winner from the comic strip harvest of 2010.
09 Mar 2011 On Thursday the 10th of March 2011 M.A.Numminen talks about beer, when Hartwall's Brewery introduces their new Aura Beer in Turku. How to increase right information about beer in Finland? Which way to drink beer would be the right one for women? These and some other topics will be in discussion in Numminen's speech before he pours a mug of the new Aura beer into his throat.
